SWEET LOGIC - Master. Om's Viewpoint

Yesterday as part of our family's daily routine, my 6 year old son was studying with me after his evening's playtime and i was revising his spellings of digits from 11 to 20. My son has been finding it very difficult to remember spellings of these numbers in the range but still not given up and does his best to give the correct answers.

After the study he again began to play and came up with a wonderful logic of learning that was easier for him,

0ne        Eleven    [Onetyone]
Two        Twelve  [Onetytwo]
Three       Thirteen[Onetythree]
.                           [Onetyfour]
.                           [Onetyfive]
.                           [Onetysix]
.                           [Onetyseven]
.                           [Onetyeight]
.                           [Onetynine]
Onety                    Twenty               Thirty           Fourty......................

The logic that my son used was correct and much more easier for a 6 year old child as ten , eleven, twelve ,thirteen are actually difficult for children to remember and then spell.

My husband and i were amazed to hear this as the logic was sweet and correct too ................

Spaces.........

Design Workshop for students of IPS Academy, Indore
On
Spaces in Architecture

Brief – Viewing architecture as space reminds us that the Experience of the built environment is primarily the experience of spatial boundaries and connections. Spatial experience is dynamic, and relies not on what’s constructed (bricks and mortar) but on what is not constructed…..space. It’s tempting to focus on what you build (walls, floors, windows, doors) which really counts, but what really drives the experience of architecture… is space. As an architecture student you’re not sculpting building materials, you primary medium is space itself.

Objective - Focus on crafting experience spaces.

The Workshop – The lecture on “Sculpting Spaces” was followed by the workshop for all the students attending the workshop. The students worked in groups of 4 each and each group made sheets and then models out of mount board, cartridge sheet, oasis block etc.

Each group had to work on a 1’x1’ base of mount board and divide it into 9 parts which could be equal or unequal using may be straight or curved or any other line and treat each part as a space by modulating either the floor, walls or columns or roofs creating passage through interesting open, semi-open, or closed spaces and guiding the movement. The flow of Space, its connections and boundaries could be changed through rhythm, focus contraction & expansion, darkness, light, scale, material and color in a way to give a different quality of experiences.

It was a wonderful experience being with the students of IPS, Indore.

Pairyachi Vihirs of Vidarbha

The bahuli vihirs or pairyachi vihirs of central india to be more specific vidarbha are beautiful examples of the structures marking the land-water interface acting as transition spaces with transendental characteristics.
These have a lot from aesthetic and functional point of view being a cool retreat, wells for irrigation and domestic purposes, housing a shrine or being by the side of a highway or road.
The main entrance with smaller sub entries to the aisles or passages at both the sides connects the resting platforms or pavilions.
Some more arch constructions for passages in the bahuli vihir. This vihir is one storied and in vidarbha we have maximum of three to four storied pairyachi vihirs as against in Gujarat and Rajasthan where they are as much as 13 storeys deep.
The human sculptures acting as guards of the vihir along with the large leaf forms, and decorated arches are carved on dressed sanstone with lime mortar.
The passages on both the sides of the steps with the water have arches and niches for may be lamps to be kept at night when being used by caravans as haulting places on travel routes.
The pairya[meaning steps in marathi] leading to the water level, which is one part of the structure.
The other part has the octagonal well with features of blind lattice work, sculptures and arches in sandstone.
The carved brackets have the floral, fruit and leaf forms.

These structures of the past are now losing importance and lying in remorse due to the lack of awareness among the people and a respect for the old. The photographs above show the condition of the bahuli vihir at hariweda village near Nagpur city, lying in utter neglect and calling for its conservation and proper upkeep.
