Spaces.........

Design Workshop for students of IPS Academy, Indore
On
Spaces in Architecture

Brief – Viewing architecture as space reminds us that the Experience of the built environment is primarily the experience of spatial boundaries and connections. Spatial experience is dynamic, and relies not on what’s constructed (bricks and mortar) but on what is not constructed…..space. It’s tempting to focus on what you build (walls, floors, windows, doors) which really counts, but what really drives the experience of architecture… is space. As an architecture student you’re not sculpting building materials, you primary medium is space itself.

Objective - Focus on crafting experience spaces.

The Workshop – The lecture on “Sculpting Spaces” was followed by the workshop for all the students attending the workshop. The students worked in groups of 4 each and each group made sheets and then models out of mount board, cartridge sheet, oasis block etc.

Each group had to work on a 1’x1’ base of mount board and divide it into 9 parts which could be equal or unequal using may be straight or curved or any other line and treat each part as a space by modulating either the floor, walls or columns or roofs creating passage through interesting open, semi-open, or closed spaces and guiding the movement. The flow of Space, its connections and boundaries could be changed through rhythm, focus contraction & expansion, darkness, light, scale, material and color in a way to give a different quality of experiences.

It was a wonderful experience being with the students of IPS, Indore.
